What should I do after an auto accident?

If you’ve been involved in car accident, there are several important steps to follow.  First and foremost, always assess the situation to make sure there are no injuries.  If someone has been seriously injured, call 911 immediately and request an ambulance.  Do not move the injured person unless it’s necessary to avoid further injury.  If you’ve been injured, request an ambulance or go to the nearest emergency room to get medical treatment.  If the accident is not your fault, insist on a police investigation and a police report.  While waiting for the police, take as many photos as possible of the damage to your vehicle, the accident scene, the other vehicle, and your injuries if safe to do so, don’t move your vehicle until the police arrive, and report all your injuries to the officer.  Get the names and phone numbers of any eyewitnesses.  File your accident report when required by law.

Notify your insurance company of the accident.  Always consult with an experienced auto accident attorney before you talk with an insurance adjuster for the at-fault driver.
